Work at Chalkbeat
Want to help us cover the effort to transform public education? Do you believe in building the future of strong, sustainable journalism? Do you love to learn on the job?
Chalkbeat is hiring mission-driven journalists, business staff, and technologists who believe an independent local press is vital to ensuring that education improves. Join us as we seek to provide deep, local coverage of education policy and practice that informs decisions and actions, leading to better schools.
We’re seeing an executive assistant to work closely with our CEO, helping her execute key duties across the organization. The right candidate will be highly organized, comfortable working at a fast pace, and a strong communicator with a willingness to learn and grow.
Chalkbeat is hosting a Report for America position! This Report for America corps member will expand Chalkbeat’s Newark bureau and work closely with the bureau chief to report on critical education news in the area. This reporter will help the Newark team build a loyal base of readership among local education stakeholders: parents, educators, nonprofit leaders and policymakers. Embracing Chalkbeat’s local-first approach, the reporter will attend school board meetings, press conferences and community events in Newark.
Additionally, this reporter will help plan and organize community engagement events, such as office hours and listening tours, to draw in traditionally harder-to-reach readers. To do this, Chalkbeat will work with local distribution partners, such as newspapers, radio and television news stations, and other online news outlets to organize and publicize events. The reporter’s engagement work will create ongoing opportunities to exchange ideas with partners to understand how Chalkbeat’s content is serving its audiences, allowing the news organization to continually improve its approach.
We’re seeking an operations associate to support our our day-to-day operations and plan for rapid growth. Our operations associate will work on projects big and small to further Chalkbeat’s expansion and views operations from a customer service perspective and looks forward to supporting the organization’s staff and overall mission.
2019 Summer Internship
We’re seeking a summer intern for a 10-week paid internship from June to August 2019. This will offer student journalists the opportunity to work alongside some of the nation’s top education journalists in a dynamic, rapidly growing organization.
