Digging Deeper: Lessons on Teaching Rights and Social Justice in a Post-‐(Michael) Brown Era
Tuesday, May 12th. 5:30-‐7:30pm
Location: The Institute for Public Knowledge (at NYU) 20 Cooper Square, 5th Floor
Join educators from schools throughout the city to reflect upon and deepen classroom-‐based approaches to teaching human rights and social justice. This year marked a series of events (from Ferguson to Staten Island, Mexico to Syria) that brought to the fore issues of racial inequality, migrant rights, social justice and the importance of human rights based approaches in our schools and communities. Join us* to discuss the ways in which a variety of curricula (e.g. Facing History and Ourselves, Amnesty International, Valencia 826, Oxfam, Education Video Center, StreetLaw, Speak Truth To Power, Rethinking Schools, etc) are explored and used in different classroom settings. Whether you are considering implementing these approaches for the first time or have been using these models for a long-‐time, this is an important forum to share with other teachers and dig deeper to consider how to better and more effectively reach and teach kids about what matters most in their lives. You are encouraged to come in small teams (and including 1 or 2 students) from your school.
A brief keynote by Professor Jon Zimmerman (NYU/Steinhardt) will be followed by interactive discussions, poster sessions and conversations with representatives from a number of the above organizations. This will be followed by a wine and lite appetizer reception.
