Find your school's 2011 remediation rates

More Colorado high school graduates are assigned to remedial courses when they enroll in a state college or university, according to a Department of Higher Education report released Tuesday.

A third of students require remedial help in math – the most common – followed by writing and reading, the data shows, following a trend that has strayed little since at least 2002. Read what Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia had to say about the latest figures at a news conference.

  • The state only releases data on those high schools with at least 25 graduates attending a Colorado college or university, in order to protect student privacy. If you can’t find your school, or there are blanks for some years, the school did not meet that minimum benchmark in any year between 2006 and 2011.
  • Click any district name to bring up all schools in that district. The state’s ten largest districts also have “district totals” encompassing high schools within that district with at least 25 graduates attending a Colorado college or university. There also are “State of Colorado” totals. See the data notes for why there are two state totals for each year.
  • To compare schools or districts, hit “Ctrl” or “command” and click on as many names as you’d like to see.
  • Clicking the “Details” button brings up more information about the number of graduates in the 2011 report needing help, including a breakdown by subject. Math is, by far, the most common area requiring remediation. Note that some students must take remedial courses in more than one subject.

Important notes about the data

  • Remediation rates are lagging indicators so the latest figures are for students entering college in fall 2010.
  • District summaries are included for the state’s ten largest school districts. These are calculated by EdNews based on all high schools in the district with at least 25 graduates attending a Colorado college or university.
  • Private schools are listed by name in this year’s report, though only 11 had at least 25 graduates attending a state college or university. These schools are listed under “Private” in the School District search box.
  • State summaries are presented in two ways – the “State Totals, Public” summaries include only those public schools with at least 25 graduates attending a Colorado college or university. The “State Totals, All Available” include private schools, high schools with fewer than 25 graduates attending a state college or university, students whose high school could not be determined and others lumped into a catchall “other” category in the state report.
  • Many students who graduate from Colorado high schools enroll in colleges or universities outside the state. Remediation rates for those students, who may be among the best and brightest graduates, are not included in any way in the state report.
