Roger Kilgore to run for Dist. 4 seat on DPS board

Roger Kilgore, a Park Hill resident and water resources engineer who ran unsuccessfully against Happy Haynes for an at-large seat on the Denver school board a year ago,  announced Thursday that he is running in District 4, which covers northeast Denver.

The seat is now filled by board newcomer Landri Taylor, head of the Denver Urban League. After a lengthy board process to fill the seat left vacant when Nate Easley resigned in January, board President Mary Seawell selected Taylor.

Kilgore, who serves on the district School Improvement and Accountability Council (SIAC) and the DPS Bond Oversight Committee, was also among the 25 brave souls who submitted applications to fill Easley’s seat.

“Our district is facing a decision,” he wrote in a news release announcing his candidacy. “The current divisive policies have only slightly moved our languishing student proficiency measures in reading, writing, and math; we still have an abysmal graduation record and an unacceptably high remediation rate in college. We can continue these policies or we can take a new direction and work together.”

Kilgore said that his previous experience running against Haynes showed him how divided the school board has become and how important it is to overcome those divisions if DPS is to succeed.

“We need to stop experimenting with our children’s futures using ideologically based strategies and focus on community driven solutions that work.”
