What: Public Symposium – Innovative Solutions for Restructuring Public School Systems When: Tuesday, May 21, 2013 from 12:30-3:30 PM Where:The Huxley Theater, NYS Museum, 222 Madison Avenue, Albany, NY 12230 The New NY Education Reform Commission members will hear presentations from education experts about innovative, successful approaches to restructuring public school systems to best meet the needs of students.

  • Elliot Smalley, Chief of Staff for the Achievement School District, will discuss efforts underway to turnaround the lowest performing schools in Tennessee.
  • Michael Griffith, Senior Policy Analyst forthe Education Commission of the States, will present on successful and innovative state strategies in restructuring school systems.
  • Dr. Jerry Weast (former superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools) will focus on reforming school district management at the county level based on the experience in Montgomery County, Maryland.
  • Daniel White, District Superintendent for the Monroe BOCES, will discuss the role and importance of Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) to providing increased academic opportunities for students and financial efficiencies for school districts.

There will be a Q&A period at the end of the symposium; the first portion will be dedicated to questions posed by the Commission members to the presenting experts followed by an opportunity for the public to submit written questions addressed to the presenting experts.
