City music teachers nearing Grammy award status

Three city music teachers are finalists for first-ever Music Educator Awards being offered by the Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation, according to a press release. They are

Janet Grice, Fordham High School for the Arts; Anthony Mazzocchi, Marine Park Middle School; and Jerry Phelps, Democracy Prep Endurance Middle School.

The city teachers are among 21 teachers in New York State and 217 teachers nationally who are quarter-finalists for the prize, which aims to recognize educators who have made lasting contributions to music education. The list will be whittled further in August, and then again in time for the grand-prize winner to attend the GRAMMY Awards in January 2014.
