A second grader at Crump Elementary School in Memphis won the Tennessee Department of Education’s “Why I’m Thankful for My Teacher” essay contest for kindergarten-through-third graders.
Shelby County Schools student Hallie Humes wrote an essay celebrating her teacher, Ms. Joyce Latiker-Davis, as part of the contest earlier this year. At a surprise celebration at Crump Elementary today, the second grader was awarded a $500 scholarship, and Latiker-Davis was presented with flowers and a gift card.
More than 3,000 students around the state submitted essays.
Hannah Balint, a high school freshman at Paige High School in Williamson County, won the category for high schoolers with an essay about math teacher Amy Tidwell. Reva Bagi, a fifth grader at Farragut Intermediate in Knox County, described her teacher Niki Adams to win the middle grades category.
All three students and teachers received celebrations and scholarships provided by the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Tennessee Business Roundtable, and the Nashville Chamber of Commerce.
